The ISSF D Licence Course was held at Mendip Shooting Ground from March 22nd– 24thand was hosted by British Shooting’s Christian Schofield.
The course had a great turn out, with 18 participants wanting to extend their coaching knowledge. Over the course of the 3 days, coaches learnt about the fundamentals of shooting and how to engage with athletes.
The range is one of the most important factors of shooting, this was one of the leading features of the course. This was demonstrated by taking coaches out to the range to explain the traps (OTR and OSK) and the formatting of a round. This included set up and schemes.
Christian covered the basics of shooting and engaged with the coaches, encouraging them to share experiences and opinions over a range of topics. The group included retired and current GB athletes, which offered great insight for other coaches by hearing their feedback on how certain elements have helped or hindered their careers.
The course offered coaching across both shotgun disciplines, Olympic Trap and Olympic Skeet and went into depth when discussing the mental, physical, tactical and technical elements of both. Further going into detail about gun fit, individual routines and demonstrations which covered warm ups, mounting the gun and movement to the target.
Sunday saw the conclusion of the course, with participants completing an exam based on their learning over the course of the weekend with a 100% success rate.
